Silence into Matter: Contact Sheets aproaches the "past that does not pass" of the Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1974). A quest that urges to remember this subject that, living in all our homes, remains silenced, in a plot of myths and preconceptions, of silent interpretations and gagged sufferings. The archive emerges as a tool for those who belong to the "Post-memory Generation," as Marianne Hirsh calls it, in journeys and wanderings through the violence, brutality, and cruelty we have inherited but stubbornly ignore.
A series of archival simulations that reclaims the format of photographic negatives to create paths of discovery, as well as various narratives with the colonial war past as a background. Part of the project Silence into Matter, the series explores the duality between truth and false, in a manipulation of the archive (both from institutions and personal backgrounds) in order to, in a presentation that eludes historical authenticity, drive critical reflection on the colonial past.
Silence into Matter: Contact Sheets aborda o “passado que não passa” da Guerra Colonial Portuguesa (1961-1974). Uma busca que impele a recordar este assunto que, vivendo em todas as nossas casas, permanece silenciado, numa trama de mitos e preconceitos, de interpretações silenciosas e sofrimentos amordaçados. O arquivo surge como uma ferramenta para aqueles que pertencem à “Geração Pós-Memória”, como lhe chama Marianne Hirsh, em viagens e deambulações pela violência, brutalidade e crueldade que herdámos mas que teimamos em ignorar.
Uma série de simulações de arquivo que recupera o formato dos negativos fotográficos para criar caminhos de descoberta, bem como várias narrativas que têm como pano de fundo o passado da guerra colonial. Integrada no projeto Silence into Matter, a série explora a dualidade entre o verdadeiro e o falso, numa manipulação do arquivo (tanto institucional como pessoal) para, numa apresentação que foge à autenticidade histórica, impulsionar uma reflexão crítica sobre o passado colonial..
