André Araújo (Porto, 1999) is a Portuguese artist, musician and researcher.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (Belgium) and a Master’s degree in Contemporary Artistic Creation from the University of Aveiro, he is currently pursuing a PhD in Artistic Creation at the University of Aveiro, School of Music and Performing Arts (Porto), School of Media Arts and Design (Porto), School of Arts and Design (Caldas Da Rainha).
His practice is guided by interdisciplinary research that combines social science methodologies and artistic strategies as a relational, sensorial and reflexive potential, framing the symbolic relationship between memory and place through a critical, artistic and political sensibility. Through the exploration of the Archive's resonances - from institutional collection or personally, in field work - his work, which reflects a technical and technological non-linearity, encounters the installation, video and performance as spaces for dialogues between sound and image.
In 2024 he was one of the artists selected for the publication of the book Portuguese Emerging Art 2024 - PEA'24, published by EMERGE - Associação Cultural and launched at the National Society of Fine-Arts (SNBA) in Lisbon. He has taken part in group exhibitions at the Aveiro/Santa Joana Museum, Cooperativa Árvore, Cultivamos Cultura, Porta-Jazz Gallery, FBAUL Gallery, Odemira Library, Casa da Cultura de Paredes, Lagos Cultural Centre, Museu do Linho de Várzea de Calde and Ectopia-LAB. He took part in the 5th Bienal Internacional de Arte de Gaia and the XII Bienal Internacional de Arte Jovem de Vila Verde, as well as recently curating the exhibition "Vidas de Clandestinidade e Resistência no Porto", organised by the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto at Casa dos Livros (Porto).
Araújo made his international debut with the ArtBox-Unboxing Portuguese Contemporary Culture Project, at the invitation of the Arte Institute, as an emerging artist, in an exhibition/show of Portuguese Contemporary Art at Washington Airport, USA. As an artist with a strong predisposition to immersive work in the territory, he was selected for Artist Residencies at SENDE (Ourense, Spain), Binaural Nodar (Viseu) and Cultivamos Cultura (Odemira), and is part of the collection of the latter two institutions.
As a research member of the Institute for Research in Design, Media and Culture (ID+), he combines academic research with artistic practice and has taken part in various international events as a speaker and lecturer, as well as an artist.
André Araújo (1999) é um artista, músico e investigador nascido e residente no Porto, Portugal.
Licenciado em Jazz pelo Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel (Bélgica) e Mestre em Criação Artística Contemporânea pela Universidade de Aveiro, frequenta actualmente o Doutoramento em Criação Artística na Universidade de Aveiro, Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (Porto), Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design (Porto), Escola Superior de Artes e Design (Caldas da Rainha).
A sua prática é orientada por uma pesquisa interdisciplinar que cruza metodologias das ciências sociais e estratégias artísticas como um potencial relacional, sensorial e reflexivo, enquadrando a relação simbólica entre memória e lugar por uma sensibilidade crítica, artística e política. Através da exploração das ressonâncias do Arquivo – de recolha institucional ou pessoalmente, no trabalho no terreno - o seu trabalho, que reflecte uma não-linearidade técnica e tecnológica, encontra na instalação, vídeo e performance um espaço para o diálogo entre o som e a imagem.
Em 2024 foi um dos artistas selecionados para a publicação do livro Portuguese Emerging Art 2024 - PEA'24, editado pela EMERGE - Associação Cultural e lançado na Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes (SNBA), em Lisboa. Integrou exposições colectivas no Museu de Aveiro/Santa Joana, Cooperativa Árvore, Cultivamos Cultura, Porta-Jazz Galeria, FBAUL Gallery, Biblioteca de Odemira, Casa da Cultura de Paredes, Centro Cultural de Lagos, Museu do Linho de Várzea de Calde e Ectopia-LAB. Participou na 5ª Bienal Internacional de Arte de Gaia e na XII Bienal Internacional de Arte Jovem de Vila Verde, além da recente curadoria da exposição “Vidas de Clandestinidade e Resistência no Porto”, promovido pelo Instituto de Sociologia da Universidade do Porto na Casa dos Livros (Porto).
Estreia-se internacionalmente no Projecto ArtBox-Unboxing Portuguese Contemporary Culture, a convite do Arte Institute, como artista emergente, numa exposição/mostra de Arte Contemporânea Portuguesa no Aeroporto de Washington, EUA. Como artista com forte predisposição ao trabalho imersivo no território, foi seleccionado para Residências Artísticas na SENDE (Ourense, Espanha), Binaural Nodar (Viseu) e Cultivamos Cultura (Odemira), fazendo parte da colecção das duas últimas instituições.
Membro do Instituto Instituto de Investigação em Design, Media e Cultura (ID+), cruza a investigação académica e a prática artística, tendo vindo a participar em vários eventos internacionais, enquanto Palestrante e Conferencista, assim como Artista.
